Lunya, family owned and fiercely independent, aims to bring a taste of Catalunya cuisine to the North West. With the full family in tow for my mum’s birthday, I thought it was time to check it out after seeing the good reviews. We were not disappointed!
Since opening in Liverpool in 2010, Lunya has been a regular fixture in the Good Food Guide with the ‘infectiously convivial buzz and cracking tapas’ hitting the mark with both locals and foodies alike.
As much as I love Tapas, it can be a rather limited experience for vegetarians and vegans. As well as not enough suitable options on the menu, if you’re the only non-meater eater in the group, you lose the ability to share dishes – the best part of eating tapas.
Thankfully, Lunya had taken care of the first part, with the largest selection of veggie options I’ve ever seen on a Tapas menu. By their own admission, the menu is one of the most extensive tapas menus in the country. It’s simply huge! All clearly labelled too, making ordering easy.
The clear labelling continues throughout the menu too, with all suitable veggie wines marked clearly. Why can’t all places get this right?! We went for the Vinas del Vero 2015, a great option.
With most people in the group choosing veggie options, we decided to order one of every veggie item on the menu. I could not wait!
Of the dishes we ordered, I’d recommend you try the Vegetable tempura, a medley of Mediterranean vegetables, cooked in a light tempura batter, served up with a rather unusual honey and lemon dip. Crunchy and delicious.
Another favourite of mine was the woodland mushrooms, pan-fried in Arbequina olive oil and served with asparagus. Great earthy, savoury flavours made this a real winner.
I particularly enjoyed how the bread and olive oil were served. You are given the choice of over ten oils to go with your bread. A nice touch indeed. The chilli infused olive oil has quite a kick. You have been warned 🙂
I can never ordered tapas without getting some Padrón peppers. These small Galician green peppers are mostly mild, with the occasional hot pepper. it always seems to be me that finds it too!
As we were dining with family, we had kids eating with us too. I’m happy to report that the kids menu at Lunya went down a treat with the younger diners. It includs a child-friendly main, ice-cream and a drink for under £9. An absolute bargain!
If you haven’t had enough of the food by the time you leave, I’d recommend that you check out the deli. As well a fine selection of cheeses, they stock a wide range of top wines for you to take home. Be sure to check it out before you leave.
With a great, atmosphere, top service and some of the best veggie tapas I’ve had in Merseyside, Lunya comes highly recommended. Do yourself a favour next time you are shopping in Liverpool ONE and make sure you stop by!
